Obesity is a condition that occurs when you have too much body fat. Obesity can occur over time when you eat more calories than your body uses. Each person has a different balance between calories that are used, and calories that are stored. Common factors may include genetics, age, gender, over eating, eating high-fat foods and not being physically active. A person is considered obese when his/her weight is 20% or more above normal weight. The body mass index or BMI measures obesity based on height and weight. A person is considered overweight when his/her BMI is between 25 and 29.9. A person is considered obese if his or her BMI is over 30. Morbid obesity is defined as more than 100 pounds over normal weight, a BMI greater than 40.
Obesity can cause an increased risk of diabetes, heart disease, stroke, arthritis and some cancers. Losing 5 to 10 percent of your weight can help delay or prevent some of these diseases.
