Services Provided
Blood Transfusion Services
The laboratory is directed by a pathologist Board-Certified in Transfusion Medicine. The following services are provided by the laboratory: blood typing, blood group antibody identification, blood transfusion reaction work-up, serological studies for hemolytic disease of the newborn and medical consultation for topics related to transfusion medicine, including but not limited to blood transfusions indications, blood component therapy,
and management of platelet alloimmunization
Clinical Chemistry
Clinical Chemistry is a fully automated laboratory which analyzes frequently ordered chemistry tests on blood, urine and other body fluids. Laboratory tests include electrolytes, intermediate metabolites, therapeutic drug monitoring, enzymes, lipids, carbohydrates and electrophoresis. The laboratory provides 24-hour service, including STAT and profile testing. Clinical consultation is available upon request.
Cytopathology
We offer quality-oriented GYN (pap smears) and non-GYN cytology by a team of board-certified
cytopathologists, state of the art Thin Prep® and SurePath® liquid-based cytology, as well as conventional pap smears. Fine needle aspiration is performed on palpable nodules, along with immediate adequacy assessment.
We offer courier service and rapid turn-around times -- GYN (paps) 2-4 days; Non-GYN 1-2 days -- as well as very competitive rates, convenient/flexible billing arrangements, direct patient billing, state of the art computerized reporting (electronic signature) and direct auto-faxing capability. Our laboratory complies with all appropriate state and federal laws and regulations regarding cytology screening
In addition, the University of Toledo Laboratories is a full-service pathology lab providing a complete spectrum of clinical lab tests and surgical pathology services, including tissue biopsies, immunohistochemistry, tumor markers, autopsies, and consultations.
Neuropathology:
Dr. Robert Mrak is a Board-certified neuropathologist, who offers interpretation of brain tumor biopsies and surgical resections, interpretation of brain biopsies for non-neoplastic conditions, interpretation of nerve and muscle biopsies, and consultation for autopsy neuropathology. We offer competitive rates and convenient/flexible billing arrangements, as well as direct patient billing, computerized reporting (electronic signature) and direct auto-faxing capabilities, telephone consultation available with the neuropathologist
Hematology & Clinical Microscopy
Hematology is directed by a Board-Certified Hematopathologist, Robert Booth, M.D., and provides a generally complete list of routine and special tests for an accurate hematologic diagnosis. Leukemia diagnosis includes special cytochemical stains and coordination with Flow Cytometry and Electron Microscopy as necessary. Cytogenetics is recommended, but is a send out test. Bone marrow diagnostic consultations are welcome.Clinical Microscopy includes urine and fluid analysis.
Immunology
The Division of Immunology has three sections: General Immunology offers diagnostic tests for infectious diseases, autoimmune diseases and immune deficiency diseases are performed, histocompatibility/transplant immunology lab where work up for transplant patients and cellular immunology tests are done, and flow cytometry lab where leukemia and lymphoma phenotyping as well as DNA analysis of tumor assessment of the immune system of transplant and immune deficiency patients is performed.
Surgical Pathology
Laboratory diagnosis encompasses all kinds of biopsy and resected samples. Modern, up-to-date ancillary techniques are available - immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, and electron microscopic analysis.
Ultrastructural Pathology
The Division of Ultrastructural Pathology is a fully equipped laboratory with both transmission electron microscopes (TEM) and a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Diagnostic services that are available include routine ultrastructural investigation and immunocytochemical labeling of biopsy specimens (i.e., renal, muscle, neoplastic), specialized techniques for platelet analysis and virus identification, and SEM for specimen surface analysis. The laboratory is capable of diagnosing platelet dysfunction related to deficiency of dense granules by a technique called the platelet whole mount method.
Special handling of specimens is required in most instances; if a blood sample is to be evaluated, it must be collected in acid dextrose citrate (ACD) vacutainer tube (10 cc preferred), kept at room temperature, and sent by overnight courier. Clinical history is also needed. Please call for additional instructions.
