Bariatric Surgery Program

Has your doctor told you that being overweight is harmful to your health? Have you wrestled with health issues stemming from obesity, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease or sleep disorders? Have you been frustrated with a seemingly endless array of unsuccessful diets, medications and other weight-loss methods?

If this sounds familiar, take the first step to learning how bariatric surgery at The University of Toledo Medical Center can improve your health and quality of life.

Bariatric surgery is a life-changing process. Our multi-disciplinary program can help you adjust to those changes and celebrate your new beginning. After all, the end to a caterpillar is the beginning for a butterfly.

You may be a candidate for bariatric surgery if you:

  • Weigh 100 pounds or more over ideal body weight.
  • Have a BMI of 40 or more, and have not been able to lose weight using diet, exercise or medications.
  • Have a BMI of 35 to 40 or more, and are at risk for serious health problems such as prediabetes, diabetes type 2, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, or obstructive sleep apnea.

Procedure offered:

Sleeve Gastrectomy

In gastric sleeve surgery, also called vertical sleeve gastrectomy, the surgeon removes a portion of the stomach, leaving only a narrow tube or sleeve connected to the intestines. The remaining stomach can only hold a limited amount of food, making you feel full sooner.

Our program includes:

  • Comprehensive care coordination by our program coordinator before and after surgery.
  • Operative education and follow-up for both the patient and family.
  • Regular support group meetings.
  • Nutrition counseling and education by our registered dietitian before and after surgery.
  • The tools you need to help you live a healthier life.
