What to Expect

When you arrive, a staff member will show you to your room and briefly introduce you to the team. Throughout your stay, we want you to feel free to ask any team member any questions you may have. It is important that you sign consents for the release of information, which allows our staff to communicate with your doctor.

What will I do here?

Your comprehensive treatment plan will list your groups, individual counseling, medications and other activities that comprise your treatment. Every patient's plan is different. Your psychiatrist will see you daily. You also will attend several groups each day.

Goals group

This meeting is held every morning. Our staff will help you set goals each day. In the evening, staff will review the progress you have made toward meeting your daily goal.

Therapy groups

These meetings will occur in the morning and the afternoon. Group members may discuss various health-related topics, or the group may seem more like a class, with our staff and group members sharing information about various mental health issues, medications, coping skills and community resources of interest.

Movement or activity groups

Physical movement helps the body heal and reduces pain. Movement also improves blood flow to the muscles and organs, including the brain. Improved blood circulation helps the body distribute medication more quickly and aids in digestion and elimination. Other groups may focus on expressive arts, board games and group activities to decrease isolation and loneliness.

Individual therapy

At times, you will be involved in private counseling sessions with your social worker or physician. During these sessions, we encourage you to try to define and resolve the stresses in your life that triggered or contributed to your current situation. These sessions are confidential so only your treatment team and others you allow us to talk to will be aware of your concerns.

Family Counseling

Sometimes, it will be helpful if we include your spouses or family members in a counseling session. Problems can be resolved during these sessions that will help you and your family after you leave the hospital. We will not give your family any information without your consent, or the consent of your legally-appointed guardian or health care power of attorney.

Medication

Medication is often an important part of your treatment plan. Fortunately, there are medication that can help reduce the depressed, anxious or confused feelings you may have. Your psychiatrist will carefully choose and evaluate each medication. Please tell your psychiatrist or nurse about any physical changes or side effects you may feel when taking medications. The psychiatrist and nursing staff will tell you about the benefits and risks of the medication prescribed to you. Be sure to ask questions. Each day, our nursing staff will administer your medication to you.

What should I bring with me?

Because you will spend much of your time out of your room in groups, you should bring two to three sets of clothing, as well as two to three sets of pajamas or nightgowns. Please bring comfortable shoes and socks. The temperature in the rooms can fluctuate, so please bring a sweater. Sweatshirts and sweatpants are a good choice. Laundry services are provided by staff.

These include any that can be used as a weapon, cause self-harm or otherwise pose a threat of injury. Patients are encouraged to send valuables home with family members.
