The clinical programs and services offered by the University of Toledo Medical Center are comprehensive and reflect a wide variety of diagnostic and therapeutic tools available to the clinician for the care of patients with cardiovascular disease.

Cardiovascular Rehab Student Internship Program

The cardiovascular rehabilitation program is a comprehensive, multidisciplinary program focused on therapeutic lifestyle changes and improving the longevity and quality of life of patients with cardiovascular disease. The University of Toledo Health Science Campus and its associated 319-bed UTMC are situated on a beautiful wooded 350-acre site in Northwest Ohio. The UTMC extends its services into many communities in Northwest Ohio and touches thousands of lives each year.

RATIONALE The cardiovascular rehabilitation internship program allows the undergraduate or graduate exercise science student to apply the principles of exercise physiology in a clinical setting.

GOALS While performing an internship in the UTMC cardiovascular rehabilitation program, the student will be able to:

OBJECTIVES By the end of your internship, the intern will have an understanding of the role of the exercise physiologist in the rehabilitation of the patient with cardiovascular disease as well as their role in interacting with physicians, nurses and dieticians as part of a multi-disciplinary team. The intern will also develop effective patient motivation and interaction skills.

APPLICATION, ADMISSION AND ACCEPTANCE Applicants must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program, have documented evidence of academic excellence and a have a well-defined goal of pursuing a career in the exercise science or health care field. Applicants to the internship program must submit the following four items:

  1. Formal letter of application
  2. Current resume
  3. Copy of official transcript
  4. Two (2) letters of recommendation

Application materials should be submitted at the latest by March 1, June 1 and October 1 for summer, fall and spring internships respectively.  In many cases interns are accepted for placement before these dates.

Once these materials are received, an interview with the staff will be scheduled. Candidates accepted into the program will need to complete the following five items:

  1. Provide evidence of current liability insurance
  2. Provide documentation of current CPR certification
  3. Provide documentation of their current immunization records
  4. Complete a two-step PPD test
  5. Attend Volunteer Orientation Session to complete the following training requirements: HIPAA & UTMC Confidentiality, UTMC Safety & Health, UTMC Cultural Competence, Patients Rights and Responsibilities, Team Work & Customer Service Attitude.
