Varian™ TrueBeam™ Linear Accelerator

TrueBeam marketing imageAt the Eleanor N. Dana Cancer, we continue to provide breakthrough treatments using the most advanced technology available for radiation treatment today. Our sophisticated equipment allows our radiation oncology team to tailor treatment to the individual needs of each patient, using the most precise, noninvasive, and comfortable options available.

About the Varian™ TruBeam™ Linear Accelerator

The TruBeam™ Linear Accelerator combines imaging, beam delivery and sophisticated motion management to accurately and precisely target tumors with speed. TruBeam provides breakthrough tools that allow our radiation oncology team to treat more challenging cancers, such as pancreas, paraspinal, lung, liver, breast and prostate.

TruBeam is an extremely versatile technology and gives our clinicians the ability to precisely tailor cancer treatments that are best for each’s patient’s condition. It allows for advanced treatment techniques, including intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT), and stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT).

The Varian™ TruBeam™ Linear Accelerator:

  • rotates around the patient to deliver a prescribed radiation dose from nearly any angle.
  • generates 3D images in 60 percent less time than is required with other imaging technologies, with the potential for a 25 percent reduction in X-ray dose to the patient
  • features an accessory called a multileaf collimator (or MLC), which shapes the beam. It has 120 computer-controlled “leaves” or “fingers” that create apertures of different shapes and sizes. The leaves sculpt the beam to match the 3-D shape of the tumor. These can move and change during treatment to target the tumor and minimize dose to the surrounding healthy tissue.
  • features real-time imaging tools that allow clinicians to “see” the tumor they are about to treat, allowing them to treat tumors with accuracy measured in submillimeters.
