Brain and Spine Tumor Radiation Treatment

Brain and spine tumors are often best managed with a combination of surgery and focused radiation treatment. For malignant low and high-grade primary brain tumors, radiation treatment helps decrease the chance of tumor recurrence following surgery and improves the potential for cure. For certain benign brain tumors, such as meningiomas, radiation treatment offers an effective alternative to surgical resection.

Leading Technology. Exemplary Care.

At UTMC, we use the most cutting-edge technology for treating brain/spine tumors, including intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT), and stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS). These technologies allow us to more precisely and effectively target cancers and minimize the dose received by the normal (unaffected) brain and spinal cord.

Our faculty has extensive expertise in the treatment of malignant brain tumors, having designed and led Phase I/II clinical trials pioneering novel radiation treatment approaches for glioblastoma multiforme. Our published work in this field has helped advance our current understanding of these challenging tumors.

At UTMC’s Eleanor N. Dana Cancer Center we take a team approach, with the knowledge that the best treatment plan involves an integrated approach using the experience and skills of specialists across the medical care spectrum.
