History of Massage Therapy
Ancient writings indicate the use of massage therapy by Hindus, Persians, Greeks and Romans thousands of years ago. Thus massage therapy may be the oldest and simplest method to promote a state of well-being.
Massage therapy was first used in the United States in the 19th century for various health purposes such as decreasing stress and anxiety and relieving pain. In addition to the United States, massage therapy is also widely used in England and Switzerland to treat numerous diseases and injuries.
In 1922 John Harvey Kellogg wrote The Art of Massage where he promoted the use of massage therapy to restore the body to a state of good health. This handbook is still used today for teaching massage therapy.
