Paramedic Training Program

The University of Toledo Medical Center Division of EMS Education

Thank you for your interest in EMS Education at The University of Toledo Medical Center. Training for a career in Emergency Medical Services is conducted by the staff of UT's Division of EMS Education (ODPS Accreditation # 322). The Division is within the College of Health Sciences' Department of Public Health.

All of the courses offered (except for the First Responder) combine classroom lectures, skills, and clinical experience. Courses are held for certification at the following levels:

First Responder

Predominately designed for industry, Fire Services, or individuals who have an interest in basic fundamentals of emergency care during the first few minutes until an ambulance arrives.

Emergency Medical Technician – Basic (EMT – B)
Currently, this is the minimal level of training required for someone who wishes to work in the EMS setting. This course focuses on the basic essentials of emergency care and ambulance operations.

Emergency Medical Technician – Intermediate (EMT – I)
This level of training expands on the EMT-Basic curriculum, and provides students with a handful of additional "Advanced" skills, such as IV therapy, defibrillation, and medication administration. Applicants must have Ohio EMT-Basic certification prior to acceptance into this level of training.

Emergency Medical Technician – Paramedic (EMT – P)
This is the highest level of certification in the pre-hospital setting. The curriculum focuses on greater depth and detail in assessment and management of various emergencies. Applicants must have Ohio EMT-Basic or Intermediate certification prior to acceptance into this level of training. We offer classes for college credit thru a cooperative agreement with Owens Community College, as well as classes without college credit.

Healthcare Provider to Paramedic
Many refer to this as "RN – to – medic" training, but it is available to other healthcare providers. Essentially, we start with our full paramedic curriculum on paper. Following an analysis of applicants prior experiences and competencies, credit is awarded for portions of the curriculum. An appropriate course structure is designed to best meet the needs of the participants.

Other Educational offerings
EMS personnel may also contact our office for more information regarding cadaver labs, perfusion labs, and Advanced Medical Life Support classes. Each of these would qualify for continuing education credits.

Some of our Paramedic classes are also offered in conjunction with the Emergency Medical Management degree through Owens Community College.
