UT Employees and their Dependants Shadow Program

All University of Toledo and University of Toledo Medical Center employees and their dependants are encouraged to voluntarily participate in a shadow experience at The University of Toledo Medical Center. The experience will allow for personal and professional growth by gaining insight into areas of the hospital that are unfamiliar to many of our UT and UTMC employees and their dependants.

All UTMC departments are required to participate in allowing employees and their dependants to shadow their department unless safety concerns present issues that are not in the best interest of the hospital, the patient or the participants.

Shadow Program Process for UT employees and dependants: The University of Toledo employees and/or their dependants should contact Volunteer Services to facilitate shadow placement with Volunteer Services Staff.

UTMC Employees must complete the following requirements:

UT Main Campus employees must complete:

  • Volunteer Enrollment Form
  • Volunteer Orientation
  • 2-step PPD test free to UT employees and their dependants when done at University Health Services (HSC)

UT/UTMC dependants must complete:

  • Volunteer Enrollment Form
  • Volunteer Orientation
  • 2-step PPD test free to UT employees and their dependants when done at University Health Services (HSC)
  • Background check if 18 and older, parent signature if under 18.

Volunteer Services will find placement of shadow experience for participants. Shadow participants may make a request for shadowing through the department of their choice.

Upon approval of the accepting department, the shadow participant will be granted a minimum 2 hour experience. The experience shall not occur during scheduled work time as this is a voluntary, unpaid program.

The shadow participant will be issued a volunteer name badge authorized by Volunteer Services department to be worn while shadowing only. The badge will be valid for the day of the experience and will indicate so. Wearing the volunteer badge opposed to one’s UTMC employee badge will prevent customers from assuming that the UTMC employee is on duty.

Employees and/or shadow participants in general are not eligible for volunteer benefits including complimentary meals.

During the shadow experience, the shadow participant must abide by UTMC policies and procedures. The accepting department must also review with the shadow participant a “department specific orientation” at the time of shadow participants initial reporting to shadow assignment.
