For over 30 years, UTMC has offered adult and pediatric kidney transplantation as one of the treatment options for end-stage renal disease.
Since the first kidney transplant operation was performed at UTMC in 1972, more than 1,500 kidney transplant operations have been performed, with an average patient survival rate of 98 percent and a graft survival rate of 94 percent. The program relies on advanced surgical techniques including laparoscopic kidney donation. Improved anti-rejection medications and high quality patient care to make it one of the most successful in the country.
The University of Toledo renal transplant team has helped to spearhead an exciting new program in the State of Ohio to help patients who have willing but incompatible donors get a transplant more quickly. This new arrangement is called the " Paired Kidney Donation Program." Through the Paired Kidney Donation Program, both patients get transplanted and both donors give kidneys – the kidneys just go to different recipients than usually expected.
As one of the oldest kidney transplant programs in the country, UTMC has contributed to the knowledge and development of revolutionary immunosuppression agents and transplant technology. |
