The Regional Genetics Center, located in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Toledo Medical Center is designated to serve an 11 county region of Northwest Ohio as part of the Ohio Department of Health's statewide genetics program. The center offers a comprehensive range of clinical, laboratory and outreach services as well as educational programs and family support networking, including diagnosis, screening, laboratory testing and counseling. Genetic counseling includes informing individuals and families about the risk of recurrence of a genetic condition in their offspring. Pre-amniocentesis counseling is offered for individuals when a prenatal diagnosis can be beneficial. Amniocentesis is coordinated with the appropriate consultants and the referring physician is notified of the results. Post-amniocentesis counseling is arranged to review abnormal results.
