The University of Toledo Medical Center Stroke Network
Stroke can strike suddenly, and without fast intervention can lead to potentially profound disability. The American Stroke Association says it is the number one cause of disability in this country and the number four cause of death.
The University of Toledo Medical Center Stroke Network is a collaborative link of hospitals connected to a central hub hospital, UTMC, with expertise in all aspects of stroke management. Using high-quality teleconferencing equipment, members of the UTMC Stroke Team are able to work in tandem with emergency department physicians at participating hospitals. Using this network, UTMC’s Stroke Team can perform a virtual examination on a stroke patient, view radiological studies, talk with family members and develop a state-of-the-art treatment plan. This network allows stroke patients to receive some of the best care in the region when time is of the essence without having to be transferred to the University of Toledo Medical Center. The patient can be quickly transported if rapid and direct intervention is required.
Wood County Hospital in Bowling Green, Henry County Hospital in Napoleon and Firelands Regional Medical Center in Sandusky are currently part of the UTMC Stroke Network. UTMC provides 24/7 consultation at no cost to the participating hospitals. The network is designed to expand patient access to university-quality care.
Dr. Mouhammad Jumaa and Dr. Syed Zaidi, vascular and interventional neurologists who trained at the University of Pittsburgh, have joined the UT faculty to direct the UTMC Stroke Network and Neuro-interventional Services.
Established in 1994, the UTMC Stroke Center is committed to providing excellent stroke care. In 2005, UTMC became one of the first hospitals in Ohio to be accredited as a Primary Stroke Center by The Joint Commission. UTMC has participated in more than 30 stroke research protocols and has four neurologists board-certified in vascular neurology. The chair of neurology and vascular neurology, Dr. Gretchen Tietjen, received the Stroke Innovation Award in 2009 from the American Heart Association and has provided leadership for the Stroke Center for more than 16 years.
