Child and Adolescent Psychiatry

    Child and Adolescent Psychiatry

Located in the Kobacker Center at The University of Toledo Medical Center, the Department of Psychiatry Child and Adolescent Division utilizes a biopsychosocial approach to the understanding of human behavior and feelings in children and adolescents, and in particular, in those who have psychiatric disorders.

The psychiatric diagnosis and treatment of a patient is provided in a comprehensive and thorough fashion, concentrating on the individual's physical and psychological makeup.

    Outpatient Treatment
Outpatient services are for children who are suffering from a variety of psychological issues including depression, anxiety, ADHD, developmental problems, autism, obsessive-compulsive disorder, adjustment problems, and behavioral disorders and/or family stress. The outpatient team provides comprehensive evaluations and makes recommendations for treatment. These include individual and family therapy, play therapy, parental guidance / training, and medication therapy. Emphasis is on empirically supported psychotherapeutic treatments.

    Inpatient Treatment
Conducted in a caring environment at the Center, inpatient treatment is individualized and tailored to meet the unique needs of each child. The facility includes 16 beds for children and adolescents 4-17 years of age.  Led by two child psychiatrists who direct treatment, the team consists of social workers, psychiatry residents, an occupational therapist, teacher, a recreational therapist and psychiatric nurses.

    Day Treatment
The Kobacker Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is a cooperative venture between the University of Toledo Medical Center and Toledo Public Schools. It is a day program that provides treatment for emotionally disturbed and behaviorally challenged children. It provides a Partial Hospitalization component certified by the Ohio Department of Mental Health.  The goal of this program is to enable a child to successfully return to classes at his or her home school. The program receives referrals from Toledo Public Schools.  In addition, a separate summer program is also available and referral is sought directly from families and community agencies.
