Treatment Services

The Cancer Center is guided by the recognition that cancer comprises a group of diseases that require treatment from multiple disciplines and specialists. The Cancer Center at the University of Toledo Medical Center utilizes a team of experts to focus on specific areas of care including:

  • Radiology
  • Diagnostic
  • Interventional Radiology
  • Dentistry
  • Pulmonary Specialists
  • Neurosurgery Specialists
  • Pathology
    • Histopathology
    • Cytology
    • Oncochemistry (tumor markers)
Our philosophy is that patient care is facilitated when all of the specialists appropriate for a particular type of cancer are immediately available on one campus. This distinguishes the Cancer Center from more traditional treatment programs where patients may see one specialist on their first visit, and need to go elsewhere to see other specialists on subsequent occasions. Furthermore, this allows our patients to receive a consensus opinion and treatment plan from the full range of cancer specialists appropriate for their disease.

At the Cancer Center, care coordinators guide patients through all steps of their care from the initial physical examination through their treatment program. Each patient is evaluated for possible participation in several ongoing clinical trials.

The Cancer Center emphasize the treatment of the patient as a whole person by assessing the need for, and providing psychosocial support. You can learn more about how the Cancer Center supports a holistic approach to caring for patients in the Patient Support section of our Web site.

Patients who come to the Cancer Center can count on access to a full range of patient care services, including:

  • Established and experimental treatments
  • Psychosocial and supportive care
  • High tech diagnostic tools
  • Up to date research information

There are many different ways to treat the various cancers that exist, depending on the type of cancer and how long it has progressed. Our cancer specialists examine these options in regular team conferences to discuss the best treatment plan for each of our patients. Treatment plans are developed working with surgical, medical and radiation oncologists; pathologists; radiologists; primary care physicians; oncology nursing staff and social workers.
