Dr. Brian F. Lane
UT Associate Professor of Surgery and Bariatric Surgeon
Dr. Lane earned his medical degree at Tufts University School of Medicine, Boston, Mass., and completed his surgery residency at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, D.C., where he was also chief resident. He is board certified in general and bariatric surgery. Dr. Lane comes to UT with 20 years of surgical experience and most recently was the bariatric medical director at a community hospital for three years.
Dr. Lane’s clinical and research interests include minimally invasive techniques for bariatric surgery, including advanced laparoscopic techniques and endoluminal and NOTES (Natural Orifice Translumenal Endoscopic) surgery,
He has performed more than 1,600 bariatric procedures, and performs laparoscopic BPD/DS (Biliopancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch), gastric bypass, lap band, sleeve gastrectomy (removal of the stomach) and revision bariatric surgery.
In addition to fellowship training in advanced laparoscopic surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and the Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Lane completed a mini-fellowship at the University of Texas, Dallas Southwestern, as well as multiple other surgical courses.
UT Medical Center’s bariatric program takes a university-quality approach to obesity. It’s focus in to reduce health issues, such as diabetes, sleep apnea, heart and vascular problems and orthopedic problems. Dr. Lane reports that 80 percent of his patients on medications to control diabetes are able to discontinue these medications after the bariatric procedure. Dr. Frederick Cason, UT associate professor of surgery, is also trained in bariatrics.
