Why Choose the Eleanor N. Dana Cancer Center?

One team. One place. One patient at a time.

One team. One place. One patient at a time.

To meet the needs of our community, The University of Toledo Medical Center established the Eleanor N. Dana Cancer Center in February of 2013. The center consolidates cancer diagnosis and treatment in one convenient location on The University of Toledo Health Science Campus, exemplifying UTMC's vision for "A Higher Degree of Healing."

We do all the work here.

Cancer comprises a group of diseases that require treatment from multiple disciplines and specialists, and at the Eleanor N. Dana Cancer Center, we believe in using a collaborative approach to help our patients heal. Our philosophy is that patient care is improved when all of the specialists necessary for a particular type of cancer are on one caregiving team in one centralized location. From your initial visits and consultations, through lab work and treatment, and into recovery, you'll be cared for by our team of specialists working together in one cancer center of excellence.

We provide innovative and cutting-edge cancer treatment options.

The Eleanor N. Dana Cancer Center was the first to offer specialized treatment for cancer, such as isolated perfusion, limb and organ-preservation procedures, minimally invasive surgery, MammoSite® treatment for breast cancer, intra-operative radiation therapy and brachytherapy.

Our medical oncologists provide the most up-to-date cancer therapy and personalized cancer treatment available in the area. We're the only cancer program in the region that has the TrueBeam™ Varian Linear Accelerator, which allows targeted delivery of radiation at a 50% faster rate than all conventional systems.

We truly respect the differences between patients and, with their input, determine the best possible combination and sequence of therapies for their specific needs.

We’ve been recognized for providing outstanding patient care.

In 2015, The Eleanor N. Dana Cancer Center received the highest possible accreditation rating from the American College of Surgeons' Commission on Cancer (CoC). Only 47 of 1,500 programs nationwide received this three-year commendation for Outstanding Achievement.

Being a Commission on Cancer designated cancer center of excellence, we were also awarded a 3 year commendation for being a Teaching Hospital Cancer Program. That means that we've met the requirements in association with a medical school, and we offer a full range of diagnostic and treatment services on our campus, and we participate in training residents in multiple disciplines.

Every member of our medical staff is board-certified in a major medical specialty, including medicine, surgery, radiology, pathology, oncology, radiation oncology and hematology.

Our cancer program participates in clinical and genetic cancer research, education, treatment and clinical trials. Many of our individual cancer departments also have discipline-specific accreditations, including:

  • Radiology — American College of Radiology for Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Mammography and Ultrasound
  • Pathology and Laboratory — College of American Pathologists

The Eleanor N. Dana Cancer Center has also been recognized by Becker's Hospital Review as one of the 100 hospitals and health systems with great oncology programs. Becker's recognized the Eleanor N. Dana Cancer Center due to its accreditation and recognition for outstanding achievement as well as its efforts to fully engage industry-leading research and advocacy organizations on behalf of our patients.

What does this all mean for you, our patient? First and foremost, we excel at what we do. Even better - while we treat your cancer, we'll treat you like one of our own.

We’re a teaching hospital.

The Eleanor N. Dana Cancer Center is uniquely positioned to offer the best in patient diagnosis and treatments, while at the same time facilitating innovative research and serving as the fertile training ground for specialists and scientists.
