UTMC Awards

The University of Toledo Medical Center is committed to providing patient-centered, university-quality care. Because of this dedication, we have recently earned the following awards and recognitions: 

Best Hospital 2015-16 by U.S. News & World Report
U.S. News & World Report has recognized UTMC as a best hospital in the Toledo metro area for 2015-16. It is the fifth consecutive year UTMC has been included in the U.S. News & World Report rankings. Nearly 5,000 U.S. hospitals were evaluated for the 2015-16 ranking. U.S. News has been publishing hospital rankings since 1990.

Most Connected Hospital 2015-16 by U.S. News & World Report
U.S. News & World Report also recognized UTMC for its digital prowess regarding patient safety and engagement. UTMC is one of 126 U.S. medical centers in 34 states to be named Most Connected Hospitals for 2015-16, per U.S. News standards that span both electronic medical records and quality care.

UTMC was evaluated in three areas:

  • Clinical connectedness, which evaluates a hospital's ability to exchange or share patient information electronically with providers;
  • Patient safety, which evaluates a hospital's ability to protect patients by using bar-coded wrist bracelets to verify patients' identities before medications and other treatments are administered; and
  • Patient engagement, which evaluates a hospital's ability to offer patients an opportunity to access their electronic medical information and receive updates.

2015 Outstanding Achievement Award from the Commission on Cancer
UTMC's Eleanor N. Dana Cancer Center received the 2015 Outstanding Achievement Award from the American College of Surgeons' Commission on Cancer. The center is one of only 20 accredited cancer programs in the U.S. to receive this national honor. The award recognizes cancer programs that achieve excellence in providing quality care to cancer patients.

Heart Failure Award

2015 Get With the Guidelines® Heart Failure Silver Award
UTMC has been awarded the Get With The Guidelines® - Heart Failure Silver Plus Quality Achievement Award. Part of an elite group of hospitals recognized by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, UTMC is recognized for its commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of care by ensuring that heart failure patients receive treatment according to nationally-accepted standards and recommendations.

2015 Get With the Guidelines® Stroke Gold Plus Award
UTMC also received the Get With the Guidelines® Stroke Gold Plus Award from the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association. The Gold Plus Award provides evidence of commitment to quality patient care and is given for achieving at least 85 percent adherence to all Get With the Guidelines-Stroke performance achievement indicators and at least 75 percent compliance with a minimum of five Get With the Guidelines-Stroke quality measures. UTMC is the only hospital in northwest Ohio to earn the Gold Plus level.

2015 Gold Award for Organ Donor Education
Working with Life Connection of Ohio, UTMC was honored for a third consecutive year for its efforts to educate people about becoming organ donors. UTMC is among a select group of hospitals and transplant centers nationwide being recognized by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for reaching gold-level status. The hospitals are part of the national Workplace Partnership for Life Hospital Campaign, sponsored by the department's Health Resources and Services Administration.

2016 LGBT Healthcare Equality Leader by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation
UTMC has again been recognized as a "Leader in LGBT Healthcare Equality" in the Healthcare Equality Index 2016, an annual survey conducted by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, the educational arm of the country's largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) organization.

Earning top marks in meeting non-discrimination and training criteria, UTMC demonstrates its commitment to equitable, inclusive care for LGBT patients and their families, who can face significant challenges in securing the quality health care and respect they deserve. UTMC was the only medical facility in northwest Ohio and one of 496 health-care facilities nationwide to achieve this status.
